We have been so hooked on designer beauty brands that are getting expensive over the years that sometimes we don't stop to think about the amount of chemicals that have been applied on our facees since the day we made beauty products our essentials. Did you know that some of the most inconspicious ingredients that lie in your kitchen are actually the best beauty products? These are a few natural and handy ingredients to feed your hair and skin and make you look and feel amazing, inside and out.

1. Avocados

Avocados are superfood, for both your skin and hair. They contain high amounts of vitamin E, healthy fats and protein and these help protect our skin from damage and keep our locks healthy. Consuming avocados can allow your body to absorb antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamin C to prevent wrinkles and slow down the signs of aging.

For face: Mash 1 ripe avocado and mix with honey. Stir until it turns into a uniform paste. Apply on your face, leave it for 10-15 minutes and rinse it off with lukewarm water. 

For hair: Mix 1 ripe avocado, 2 tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of olive oil to form a paste. Damp your hair and apply the paste onto your hair, focusing on the ends. Give your head a massage with the mixture and clip your tresses up. Allow the mask to sit for about 45 minutes then rinse it off in the shower and proceed with your hairwash routine.

2. Green tea

Green tea is more than just, well, tea. It is loaded with a high amount of antioxidants such as catechins as well as amino acids, enzymes, vitamin B and other vital nutrients for the body. In addition to its health benefits, green tea has an impressive effect for skin and hair care as it helps to improve your skin complexion and stimulate hair growth. Drinking green tea can also helps flushing out toxins from your body and aids in weight loss too!

For face: Empty of 1 or 2 sachets of used green tea bags into a bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of honey and 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice to it and mix thoroughly. Apply the mixture on your clean face and neck, leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse it away. 

For hair: Allow 4 cups of green tea to cool after brewing. It varies depending on the length of your hair. After it has cooled, pour it on your damp hair and allow to sit for 10 minutes. Then, wash your hair with a mild shampoo. The anti-inflammatory properties in green tea prevent hair loss hence strengthen hair follicles. Remember, only healthy scalp can enhance hair growth.

3. Oranges

Oranges are commonly used for salads and juice. It is suitable to eat before meals as oranges contain high fibres that can help a lot in effective digestion as the digestive enzymes and juices are released much more easily, giving relief from any sort of digestion disorders. The antioxidants in this fruit prevent free radicals from affecting you. So your skin can keep healthy and all the goodness will help delay the ageing process. We often toss the orange peels but it has its benefits too! Orange peel is super beneficial for whitening skin and shiny hair.

For face: Dry the orange peels under the sun. After it has completely dried, grind the peels, and add milk to the ground peels until you get the consistency of a paste. Apply this on your face and neck for 15-20 minutes before washing off.

For hair: Grind the orange peels and apply generously to the entire length of the hair. Massage your scalp for a bit and let it sit for half an hour. Rinse this off using lukewarm. This hair mask is packed with essential nutrients that help in strengthening and reviving your damaged hair.

4. Yogurt

Yogurt is full of protein, vitamin D, calcium and probiotics, no doubt providing delicious benefits for your body. Apart from that, it can do beauty wonders for your skin and hair as well. Yogurt contains lactic acid that dissolves dead skin cells so this gentle exfoliation helps to prevent breakouts and also diminishing visible lines and wrinkles on your skin. Not forgetting that it can keep your hair well moisturized and soft. 

For face: Spread unsweetened yogurt all over your well cleansed face and neck in a gentle circular motion. Let it stay for 10 minutes to achieve optimum result.

For hair: Simply bring a container of unsweetened yogurt with you when you shower and apply it to your damp hair. Allow the mixture to soak in for 10-15 minutes and rinse it out. There you go, a truly natural hair conditioner to combat itchness and irritation.

5. Honey

The beauty benefits of honey have been long known to us. Honey, composed mainly of glucose and fructose, also includes proteins and amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, minerals and other minor components that offer many beauty benefits. It contains anti septic and anti-microbial properties which speeds up the healing process so it is effective to cure acne and restore dry hair. 

For face: Dab raw honey on acne. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow it to work its charm and rinse it off with tepid water.

For hair: Applying honey on your hair alone can get very sticky, so olive oil works wonderfully to help smooth and coat the hair shaft. Mix honey and olive oil, and then warm the mixture on top of a stove or in a microwave. Apply from scalp to hair ends and leave on for 10-20 minutes before shampooing off for crazy soft hair and a nourished scalp.

6. Eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein. It explains why gym goers munch on egg whites every single day! Aside from its health benefits, you can use eggs for your skin and hair: whites for the skin, yolks for the hair. It'll provide nourishment to skin and grant you healthier and shinier tresses after application of yolks and egg whites. 

For face: Add 1 egg white with 1 tablespoon of honey and mix it well. Apply it on your face and leave it for about 15-20 mins and then rinse with warm water. This mask is effective for improving your skin tone with its brightening effects.

For hair: Mix 1 egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and mix well. The amount is good enough to apply on the ends of your hair. If you intend to work it to the roots, you may double the recipe. After you've done applying the yolk paste, wear a shower cap and wait for an hour or so. Time to throw yourself on your couch and Netflix! Rinse off the hair mask during your shower and carry on with your regular shampooing.

7. Oatmeal

Many of us start up our day with a warm bowl of oatmeal with fresh fruits and nuts. Oatmeal is great for tackling some health issues such as high cholesterol, high blood sugar and coronary heart disease. In addition for internal health, the vitamins and minerals in oatmeal are good for your skin and hair too. 

For face:  Rinse your face with lukewarm water before applying the scrub. It will help open up your pores and prepare your skin for the exfoliating treatment. Combine 1 tablespoon of oatmeal with a dash of warm milk. Wait for 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture soften. Massage your face with the scrub gently in circular motion for 1-2 minutes to exfoliate your skin. Then, rinse with warm water following by cold water to close your pores. Your skin will feel hydrated, soft and silky smooth.

For hair: Oatmeal can help with inflammation due to dryness of the scalp. For this easy DIY treatment, mix uncooked oatmeal with water to desired consistency (you can add some olive oil or essential oil to the mix to help loosen scales). Spread the paste onto your scalp and wait for at least 10 minutes before rinsing.
